Found Type from Art 204

Pills !

I found this on a street in Portland, Oregon in April of 2009.  I was tired, hungry and in the need of a pick-up.  This little gem was, as most paper residue gravitates, up against the curb with other items pressing it down.   I snatched it up, and to my excitement upon inspecting it further, found a wonderful handwritten exclamation on the obverse of the rather boring business card, oddly from the East Coast.

Pills!

P-i-l-l-s-!

I love the undulating form of the word, how it cavitates and arches from the baseline––the relative thinness of the glyphs (oh, to be a hairline), and the generous spacing between the letters.

I am left only to wonder why this word entered its life on the back of a crummy business card, thousands of miles from home, exclaiming “pills
